Global Strain Rate Map : Results for version 1.2 (spring 2004)

Below you'll find a figure with a contour plot of the second invariant of the model strain rate tensor field (click here for a PDF version, or here for a PDF version with a black background) derived from the fit to 5710 geodetic velocities world-wide as well as fault slip rates in Asia. For areas where no fault slip rate data are used we applied a priori constraints on the style and direction (not magnitude) of the model strain rate tensor field. These constraints are inferred from the seismic strain rate field associated with all shallow events in the Harvard CMT catalog.
